Mind of a Champion

by Dr. Regina Campbell

“Our life always expresses the result of our dominant thoughts.” Soren Kierkegaard

Proverbs 23:7
For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he: Eat and drink, saith he to thee; but his heart is not with thee.

It is great to have goals, dreams, and hopes. It is wonderful if you are taking steps to work toward your goals. If you do not have the right mindset, however, you may never reach your goals. This is not because you are unable to achieve what you want but because you can hold yourself back from success, often without even realizing it. You see, if you do not have a positive mindset and a belief system that tells yourself you are capable and willing to meet and exceed your goals, then you could be doomed to fail before you even get started. Failure itself isn’t a bad thing, provided that you fail because you try (instead of because you do not ever start) and that you learn from your mistakes and move forward in a positive and deliberate manner, choosing to keep going and not give up. Think about this: One’s level of success is determined by one’s mindset.
Greatness lies within all of us; however, only those who have a mindset of greatness will become great. The mind is the doorway to how a person thinks. What you let in your mind is what you will focus on and become; because of this, what you read or listen to is important. The mind is the vehicle to your emotions; how you feel about and react to what happens to you starts in your mind. Therefore, it’s crucial that you remain level-headed so that your emotions do not go in a direction that you regret, resulting in a negative mindset. In order to have a positive mindset, you have to learn to control your emotions. For example, if you think someone doesn’t like you and you ponder on it continually, your emotions will follow. Your emotions will increase your resentment and dislike for that person. Your mind also is a container; it harbors thoughts—thoughts about people, your situation, your past, your future, yourself, doubt, fear, success, winning, and losing, among other things, so be careful what you focus on.
