Who Or What Is Leading You?

by Dr. Regina Campbell

John 16:13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. (KJV)

“Never allow your ego to diminish your ability to listen.” Gary Hopkins

Have you ever decided that you were certain that was God’s leading? You were so confident in that decision but later you determined that the decision was not God’s leading. The above scripture teaches us that the Holy Spirit which is the Spirit of Truth will guide us in all decisions. Thus, the question becomes what and how do you go about making decisions. What are the determining factors you consider? What I’ve learned is that when I’ve made a decision and it was clear later that it wasn’t the leading of the Holy Spirit but instead it was the leading of my own selfish desires. It turned out to be not what I wanted and not the will of God. How can you ensure that you are led by the Spirit of Truth (Holy Spirit) and not your own personal will? First, when you pray ask God to lead you and give you the insight on His will in the situation. God’s will always turn out to be the best for you in the long run. The greatest challenge is that God’ will at times seems to be contrary to making sense. However, this is where faith and trusting God come in play. Most important is that God’s will always align with God’s purpose for your life. Second, when you are led by the Holy Spirit you will have a deep level of peace and tranquility. For example, when I took a job out of state and I had to move not knowing anyone in the new town or how the new job would turn out. In the long run that job and the people I developed great relationships with turned out to be one of the best experiences spiritually, professionally and personally. On the other hand, I made another decision to move and that experience was not good for me personally and professionally I couldn’t find a job in that city. Finally, don’t make a decision without counting up the cost. According to Luke 14:28 “For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost, whether he have sufficient to finish it?” Thus, when you make a decision what will it cost you means – who will it impact, what is the financial implications, what is the long-term impact, and if this decision is not the right decision what will it cost me in time and money? In summary you have to prayer for God’ will and insight, seeking God’s will over your will.
