The Importance of Exercising

by Dr. Regina Campbell

“To enjoy the glow of good health, you must exercise.” Gene Tunney

You may not like to perspire or exercise but know that exercising has a lot of benefits to your health and fitness. If you recall there was a reason growing up in school they had Physical Education as part of the curriculum. It was for the purpose of making certain that we live a healthy life as we mature and grew. If you recall it was then that the child obesity rate was much different than it is now and subsequently obesity amongst adults are at a higher rate now. In addition I recall classes that taught us the proper balanced meal. Today I want to encourage you that you may not have the natural proclivity to exercise but know it’s one thing that you can invest in that will yield you great deal of benefits. You don’t have to do a lot but something that keeps that body moving and developing your strength. You need to find some type of exercise that you can do that you’ll enjoy. I must admit I am not a fan of everything as I have my favorites. The key is do something and do it consistently. Maybe it’s walking, riding a bike, taking a hike, jogging, playing tennis, playing basketball, working out on a step climber or take a group class such as cross fit. These are considered cardo training. Why is cardo training important because your heart is a muscle and you need to keep you heart in good shape as it’s is one of the most important and vital organs in the body. Second, why is strength training important. Strength training assists in decreasing fatty tissues in your body and build lean muscles. Anytime you can decrease fatty tissues in your body then you will see benefits of a leaner and a more fit body composition. You don’t have to lift weights but use resistance bands, small dumb bells and doing exercises that uses your own body weight. For example you can do push-ups, crunches, leg raises and other methods that will give you strength training. Of course you can do weight training as well for strength training. The idea is not to train like you are competing as an athlete but to build strong bone capacity and decrease your fatty tissues. In addition there is a myth that weight training makes you bulky and unattractive if you are a woman that is false information. Weight training again decreases fatty unwanted tissues in your body. Finally stretching is just as important. As you get older you’ll lose your flexibility. Benefits of flexibility exercises is that it lengthen and stretch muscles and can help you prevent injuries, back pain, and balance problems. A well-stretched muscle more easily achieves its full range of motion. This gets blood and oxygen flowing to your muscles.
