A New Spirit

by Dr. Regina Campbell

And now let us welcome the New Year, full of things that never were.” —Rainer Maria Rilke

Matthew 9:17

“Neither is new wine put into old wineskins. If it is, the skins burst and the wine is spilled and the skins are destroyed. But new wine is put into fresh wineskins, and so both are preserved.” ESV

The New Year presents an opportunity to realign our lives with the purposes of God for our lives. Many people think just because they write down or state they will accomplish a goal for the New Year that it will automatically happen. The principle from Matthew 9:17 informs us that we need to have an internal change in our spirit and soul. A spiritual renewal is imperative for you and me to reach our spiritual destiny in God. We need to upgrade our spirit in that we need to draw closer to God, grow as a child of God. To possess a new spirit is mature in a way we have never matured in God. It’s to become true living examples of Jesus Christ. What many people don’t understand is that attempting to achieve life goals and dreams is great but when you try to do so outside of an intimate and personal relationship with God it is unfulfilling. This year I encourage you to truly draw closer to God and decide what areas of your spiritual life you desire to change so that you can grow spiritually and achieve a new spirit. A new spirit is changing your internal disposition, your attitude, your mindset, and your behavior. Thus in order to gain a new spirit you must upgrade your spiritual seeds such as reading the bible, prayer, church attendance and attending mid- week bible study.

As you come into a New Year list those things in your life from a spiritual perspective you desire to embrace. Is it more consistent time reading the bible, is it more consistent time in prayer, is it being consistent in your church attendance or perhaps it is offering your time and talent for service in your local church. Many people attend church regularly but they do not get involved or engaged in the ministry. When you serve it aids your spiritual development. When you are truly involved in the work of the local church you become more spiritually fulfilled from serving. In closing when you come to a higher spiritual life you’ll find that your faith in God will be strengthen and your attitude, mindset and behavior will exemplify Christ’s attributes.
